We must poll!
It all started when…
A cuban american professor of political Science arrived in Santiago de Chile in April 1984, only a couple of months after we had returned to Chile in 1983, to attend a seminar on the chilean political situtation and transitions to democracy. He said “ we must poll”. That was the kicking initial impact.
Together with my husband at the time Director of CERC, we applied a pilot study among university students which was a success. Then a very first face to face survey in the metropolitan area , and then a national sample in November 1987 which marked the beginning of national polling in Chile. It was the first national survey to be applied in the country.
From then onwards polling became the main activity allowing to anticipate the result of the plebiscite that produced the transition to democracy in Chile on the 5th of October 1988.
CERC has produced since then (1987) an uninterrupted time series of national polls BAROMETRO. CERC, monitoring Chile´s political, economic, social and democratic development. From 2014 onwards it joins MORI becoming the political barometer BARÓMETRO POLÍTICO CERC-MORI.
Marta Lagos installed the first opinion barometer at the beginning of 1990´s in Chile which in turn was only a warming up for the larger operation of founding Latinobarómetro and later coordinating the regional barometers in the world.

125 surveys have been applies producing the longest time series in Spanish and in Latina America: 1200 face to face interviews applied in households with modified random probabilistic national samples, 3% sample error.
MORI 1994 - 2019
500 surveys with a minimum of 400 maximum of 33.000 face to face interviews applied with paper, caps and wapi. Today most of the surveys are applied with tablets.

MORI Market Opinion Research International is a British company that became part of the IPSOS group. MORI (Chile) was founded in 1994 by Marta Lagos who left CERC to start her own company.

Latinobarometro is an NGO founded in 1995 by Marta Lagos in order to apply the yearly survey. www.latinobarometro.org
